After receiving his BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art, Marvin embarked on the long road to discover the knowledge that he felt was so evident in the work of the old masters. He is most indebted to John Frederick Murray, a student of the late Frank Reilly, for his insights into the academic painting process and his great encouragement.
A distinguished educator, Marvin teaches classes at the School of Visual Arts in New York City in addition to conducting private portrait and figure painting workshops around the country. |
After receiving his award at the Portrait Society of America's Dallas, TX International competition, Marvin Mattelson had this to say about Silver Brushes.
"I was very happy to receive my award but I take everything with a grain of salt. I always compare myself to the great masters so in that respect I always seem to come up a wee bit short.
Actually the best part of the prize, aside from the money, was getting my free Silver Ruby Satins!!! I truly love those brushes.
They are the perfect consistency for me. They can be stiff like bristles and also be soft like sables, depend-in on how they are handled.
All my students get addicted once they try them. They are magic and I truly couldn't have painted the Cardinal without them!
Thanks again, Marvin."
