Heather Neilson
I am a non-objective, abstract artist employing an intuitive and expressive approach to painting. I use automatism and gestures to unearth internal states of being and to respond to external stimuli. I am inspired by what makes me feel most alive.
I approach a work with immediacy as each layer, mark or brush stroke informs the next step. Art making demands a certain kind of surrendering and a willingness to let be. I experiment with line, texture, pattern, layers and energy. The process is cathartic and my desire is for my work to evoke and connect to an emotion or memory in the viewer.
Heather Neilson is an artist and art educator primarily in abstract painting, collage and art journaling. She has pursued the study of art history and direct art making for the last 25 years, studied at the New York Art Students League and with several master artists. She received her B.A. in Communications from Rutgers University. She teaches art workshops to adults and teens in her studio at Whiting Mills in Winsted, CT and throughout the region.
