John Howard Sanden

The pivotal year in John Sanden’s career was 1969, when he left a long-standing role in Christian art in the Midwest to pursue portrait painting in New York City. Within months, he joined the faculty at the Art Students League, partnered with Portraits, Incorporated, and built a national clientele of prominent and influential figures.

In 1974, Sanden founded The Portrait Institute and began a nationwide teaching career, drawing audiences of up to 700 people. He expanded his reach through correspondence courses and, in 1979, launched the National Portrait Seminar—the largest art seminar program in the U.S.—while also delivering a standing-room-only annual lecture series at the Art Students League for 23 years.

Despite his demanding teaching schedule, Sanden completed over 500 portraits of notable leaders in American education, business, and public life. In recognition of his contributions, he received the inaugural John Singer Sargent Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 1994, and later that year, was awarded a Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Houghton College.
