Nelson Shanks

Nelson Shanks, American’s foremost portrait painter. Renowned for his teaching, and prolific painting ability. Nelson’s work hangs in palaces, galleries, museums throughout the world. Portrait painter of Popes, Queens, Kings, Princes, Princesses, Dukes, Barons and more.

In Italy, he studied at l’Accademia d’Belle Arte in Florence with Pietro Annigoni. He traveled and studied extensively throughout Europe. Earlier he studied in New York at the National Academy of Design and The Art Students League with Ivan Olinsky, Robert Brackman, Edwin Dickinson and privately with John Koch and Henry Hensche.

His work has been exhibited in many museums, universities and galleries in the United States as well as The Royal Palace, Stockholm and Kensington Palace, London. His work is in very distinguished European and American collections. He is currently represented by the Forum Gallery in New York City.

Commissioned portraits of noted figures include: HRH Diana, The Princess of Wales, His Majesty King Carl Gustov and Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden, Queen Julianna of the Netherlands, Former President of the US, Ronald Reagan, Lady Margaret Thatcher, Luciano Pavarotti, J. Carter Brown, Katharine Graham, Mr & Mrs Wafic Said, The Honorable Judge Guido Calabresi, Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, and many others. Spring 2001 he has been commissioned to paint the official portrait of President Clinton for the National Portrait Gallery.
